Arrest of the Famous Algerian Influencer Rafik Meziane in Paris

The French Minister of the Interior announced the arrest of the well-known Algerian influencer Rafik Meziane, known by the nickname “Sabah,” on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, in Paris. His detention follows the broadcast of videos inciting violence and encouraging terrorist acts on French soil.

This incident comes at a sensitive time, as France faces increasing concerns about terrorist threats. Authorities acted swiftly to prevent any calls that could lead to acts of violence within the country.

Interior Minister Bruno Retillo stated on the “X” platform after the arrest: “There is no tolerance for those who engage in spreading hatred and inciting violence.”

This security operation coincides with heightened tensions in France-Algeria relations, particularly following Paris’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, which has worsened recent diplomatic disputes between the two nations.

The arrest of Rafik Meziane, also known as “Qashiha,” is part of a broader crackdown targeting other Algerian influencers accused of spreading hate speech and inciting violence. Among them is Sofia Ben Laman, a TikToker placed in custody after issuing “death threats” and hurling insults during a live stream.

Within a week, French authorities have detained several Algerian influencers on similar charges. Among them is Zazou Youssef, 25, arrested in Brest for a video calling for violent acts in France and Algeria, and Imad Tantan, 31, arrested near Grenoble for inciting extreme violence, including calls for murder and sexual assault. The latter remains in custody and is set to stand trial on March 5.
